Angela is the Chair of the Australasian Council for Undergraduate Research (ACUR). From 2009, as Professorial Fellow in the Learning and Teaching Centre of Macquarie University she developed undergraduate research initiatives across Macquarie and nationally. From 1995-2008, she was Associate Professor at the University of Sydney where she led strategic university-wide projects developing the scholarship of teaching and learning, research-enhanced learning and teaching, and research higher degree supervision. She came to Australia in 1995. Prior to that she worked as the Head of the Academic Development Centre at the University of Portsmouth, UK.
Research
Angela achieved a reputation as the foremost researcher and scholar internationally in the field of research on the interrelationship between teaching and research and has contributed visionary work that developed conceptual understanding of higher education worldwide. A sustained program of research on the nature of research and its relationship to teaching resulted in a significant and sustained publication record with many sole-authored publications in prestigious international peer reviewed journals such as Studies in Higher Education, and Higher Education, and in chapters in books by leading scholars. She has a Google Scholar h-Index of 39 and an i10-Index of 68.
Angela’s research and scholarship has been recognised through invitations to give keynote addresses in international conferences, and to present funded seminars or workshops at many Australian and overseas universities. Teaching
At Macquarie University, Angela was the Project leader for a strategic project on the development of undergraduates’ awareness of, and engagement in, research. She later went on to lead an Australian Learning and Teaching National Senior Teaching Fellowship entitled “Enhancing undergraduate engagement through research and inquiry”. Before joining Macquarie University, she worked at the University of Sydney where she designed, developed and taught the Graduate Certificate in University Teaching; She was the Course coordinator for the Masters in Education (Higher Education); and she also supervised PhDs. In her academic development role she led a University strategic project on Research-Enhanced Learning and Teaching, and was responsible for the University’s Research Higher Degree Supervision Development Program.
Awards and Publications
Angela has published nine books and over 250 refereed journal articles, book chapters, conference papers and reports. Her research is focused on the nature of research and its relation to teaching, learning and scholarship, models of research-led teaching and undergraduate research. Her books include: The Nature of Research: Inquiry in Academic Contexts (RoutledgeFalmer 2001); Research and Teaching: beyond the divide (PalgraveMacmillan 2006); Transforming a University: The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Practice (University of Sydney Press 2007, with Sachs); and Academic Research and Researchers (McGraw Hill 2009, with Lucas).
Angela is an elected Fellow of the UK’s Society for Research into Higher Education (SRHE), and a Life Member of the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia (HERDSA). She was President of HERDSA from 1999-2003 and co-editor of the International Journal for Academic Development from 2000-2008.
